A Commission Will Be Formed to Evaluate the Activities of the Latvian Academy of Sciences
The Ministry of Education and Science (MES) will propose the formation of an inter-institutional commission to evaluate the legal status, functions, governance model, and role of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS) in the national science and innovation system.
The ministry informed the LETA agency that an agreement on the formation of the commission was reached at a government party cooperation meeting on Tuesday.
The comprehensive evaluation of the functions and future role of the LAS was suggested by the Minister of Education and Science, Ilze Indriksone (NA). The MES will submit a draft order to the government regarding the formation and tasks of the commission. The ministry believes that recent events surrounding the LAS have reached a critical point, demonstrating that the initially intended mission model of the academy no longer works in practice.
