The National Defense Service Recruits Are Planned to Be Redirected to the Border Guard
The government today conceptually supported the implementation of a part of the National Defense Service (NDS) system in the State Border Guard (SBG) during a closed meeting.
The government's decision stipulates that the Ministry of the Interior (MoI) will cooperate with the Ministry of Defense regarding the development of the procedure for implementing the NDS in the border guard, identifying the necessary resources, and additional financial resources needed for each of the involved institutions.
The goal of implementing the NDS in the SBG is to promote informed and understanding-based engagement of young people in the work of state institutions and national defense, as well as in crisis management, regardless of the choice a person makes after the service ends - whether to continue service in the SBG, the National Armed Forces, or another law enforcement agency.
Additionally, the implementation of the NDS in the SBG would facilitate significant changes in the development of the service, allowing for the strengthening of border protection capacity while simultaneously providing young people the opportunity to fulfill national defense service by practically engaging in the protection of Latvia's borders, the MoI indicates.
