Preventive Disinfection of Water Pipes to Take Place in Riga

Published: 02.11.2026

To maintain the quality of the supplied water, from midnight today until Thursday, November 5, at 11:59 PM, the second and final preventive disinfection or chlorination of the water pipe networks this year will take place in Riga, the agency LETA was informed by the Communications Department of SIA "Rīgas ūdens".

During this time, the water may have a more pronounced chlorine smell and a slight aftertaste.

Although the concentration of chlorine used for disinfection is not harmful to health, as a precaution, it is recommended to use boiled water both during disinfection and for 24 hours after it. The total length of Riga's centralized water supply networks is more than 1500 kilometers, but its average age exceeds 45 years. The maintenance of such an extensive water supply system requires regular preventive measures, the company emphasizes. To ensure water quality not only at its preparation sites but also throughout its delivery path to residents, "Rīgas ūdens" performs preventive disinfection or chlorination of water pipes twice a year.

This helps to preventively limit the proliferation of microorganisms in the water supply network, reducing the risk of microbiological contamination, the company informs. The disinfection of water pipes will begin simultaneously at all "Rīgas ūdens" water supply pumping stations, as well as in several places in the city, using mobile equipment.
