Prosecutor's Office Starts Investigation into Citizenship Grant to Vishwanath
The Prosecutor's Office has started an investigation into the granting of Latvian citizenship to Indian citizen Divya Vishwanath, as reported to the LETA agency by the General Prosecutor's Advisor on Communication Issues, Santa Vaļuma. The Prosecutor General's Office has evaluated publicly available information that the Saeima adopted a law on October 15 granting Latvian citizenship to Vishwanath, but on October 22 adopted a law repealing the previous law.
Considering that the compiled information contains details of a possible violation of the law, namely, the initially adopted Saeima law on citizenship granting was repealed due to significant doubts about its legal basis, the Prosecutor General's Office has started a prosecutor's investigation. Simultaneously, on Monday, the Prosecutor's Office also received a submission from the head of the Saeima faction of the party "New Unity," Edmunds Jurēvics, requesting the granting of citizenship to Vishwanath's husband, Kanan Vishwanath, in 2023.
The Prosecutor's Office is still evaluating Jurēvics' submission and will inform about further progress shortly. Jurēvics' submission concerns "the influence of the Saeima's Citizenship, Migration, and Social Cohesion Commission on legislation in the context of national security." In it, the Prosecutor's Office is asked to evaluate information about the law adopted by the Saeima in 2023 recognizing Vishwanath as a Latvian citizen.
This law was submitted by the Citizenship, Migration, and Social Cohesion Commission. Similarly, Jurēvics' submission requests an evaluation of the law adopted by the Saeima on October 15 this year, recognizing his spouse as a Latvian citizen. This law was also submitted by the Citizenship, Migration, and Social Cohesion Commission.
