The US has proposed to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to resume the sale of Russian natural gas to Europe using American intermediaries to bypass European Union (EU) sanctions, reports the newspaper "The Wall Street Journal," citing sources.

This idea was put forward by US President Donald Trump's special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff during their visit to Moscow and Kyiv in September.

The White House has proposed that the proceeds from the sale of Russian gas be transferred to a deposit account in the jurisdiction of a third country, so that the Kremlin cannot use these funds to finance the war.
According to US negotiators, Russia's return to the European natural gas market would be a strong incentive for Putin to agree to the so-called energy truce in the war initiated by Moscow against Ukraine.

Meanwhile, gas supplies to Kyiv would ensure revenues from transit fees. Moreover, gas sales would open up lucrative opportunities for US investors.

Trump's negotiators have tried to present this idea to European leaders as a way to lower energy resource prices before winter, at a time when gas reserves in Europe have reached their lowest level in recent years, writes "The Wall Street Journal."
