KP has identified a cartel in the funeral services sector
The Competition Council (KP) has identified a cartel in the funeral services sector, the agency LETA was informed by KP. For the competition law violation committed, the companies have been fined a total of more than 47,000 euros.
On October 2, 2025, KP conducted procedural actions as provided for in the Competition Law in several companies and locations operating in the funeral market as part of an investigation into a possible prohibited agreement.
KP had information indicating that at least eight companies may have exchanged commercially sensitive information with each other, unlawfully agreed on participation rules, and submitted coordinated bids in public procurement organized by public entities for funeral services, as well as for related services and specialized transportation procurement, thereby violating the prohibition of agreements established in the Competition Law.
Horizontal prohibited agreements or cartels in procurement are one of the most serious violations of competition law, therefore, for the mentioned violation, market participants may be fined up to 10% of their last financial year's net turnover for each, but not less than 700 euros each, and cartel participants are prohibited from participating in public procurements for three years after the KP decision comes into force.
