Antonelli becomes the youngest F-1 champion in history
"Mercedes" Italian driver Kimi Antonelli became the youngest Formula One (F-1) champion in history on Sunday in Mexico City.
To secure the title, Antonelli needed only a ninth-place finish in the 19th race of the season on Sunday, but he finished third. Max Verstappen ("Red Bull") won, and Lewis Hamilton ("Ferrari") was second.
Antonelli became champion at the age of 20 years and 68 days, significantly surpassing the previous record holder, German Sebastian Vettel, who won the title in 2010 at the age of 23 years and 134 days. Antonelli is the first Italian F-1 champion since 1953, when Alberto Ascari won the championship.
After 19 of 23 races, Antonelli has 380 points, Verstappen has 261 points, and Hamilton has 259 points.
